Silicone Seal and Straps for Face Mask by Simolex
SIMOLEX RUBBER CORPORATION PLEDGES ITS SUPPORT TO ASSIST IN THE MANUFACTURING OF PPE FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS:
The rapid spread of COVID-19 has put many healthcare professionals (“HCP”) under great strain as they selflessly provide treatment and care to affected patients without adequate supplies of personal protective equipment (“PPE”). Simolex Rubber Corporation (“Simolex”) is offering its manufacturing expertise and consulting services to those who are developing new methods to design and manufacture PPE. Simolex has been manufacturing silicone extruded products for over 25 years and serves various end markets (most notably, the medical device industry). Over the past week, we’ve received numerous inbound requests from individuals, non-profits, and large-scale manufacturers to assist them in developing medical grade silicone seals for face masks. During this time, we have assisted in rapid prototyping, same day manufacturing, and next day delivery of our silicone extruded product samples to our manufacturing partners. One of the biggest problems with face masks is that due to varying facial profiles, the masks are not always able to create a proper seal around the face, leaving the HCP susceptible to harmful airborne particles. These face masks also create a level of comfort after worn for long periods of time. Extruded silicone seals are the answer to that problem. Silicone rubber has many properties that make it advantageous for use in the medical device industry. Silicone is highly flexible, water / chemical resistant, and ensures an air tight seal around a HCP’s face.

During this time, we have assisted in rapid prototyping, same day manufacturing, and next day delivery of our silicone extruded product samples to our manufacturing partners. One of our manufacturing partners has been utilizing our bulb seals to create 3D printed masks supplemented by HEPA filters to be used by HCPs in active treatment zones. An example of a 3D model can be downloaded via the link provided below.
Some of our capabilities include:
- Rapid tooling/prototyping
- Material selection and consulting
- In house capabilities to manufacture and ship rapidly (US-based manufacturing facility)
- Experience working with medical and food grade silicone
- Once the prototype is approved/accepted, we can begin mass manufacturing immediately
We recognize that not all masks can be single use and must be worn for days at a time. Some of our manufacturing partners are utilizing materials that can be sanitized and reused. Our silicone products offer the same level of reusability. Recommendations for cleaning our silicone seals can be found below:
- Rubbing Alcohol: This is one of the easiest and most common methods of sterilizing medical grade silicone.
- Silicone items are dishwasher safe. We recommend removing cords from the masks and washing them separately.
- You can also hand wash silicone seal in warm soapy water.
We are looking for our customers and partners to join us in sharing resources to help overcome this pandemic. It is in these dire times that we must come forward to help our community in a time of great need. If you are working on a prototype, have access to 3D printers, or are seeking to get approval from the FDA and NIOSH for PPE, our products can assist in stopping the spread of COVID-19 in healthcare settings and allow HCPs to take care of those affected. Conversely, if you are a medical device manufacturer, hospital, healthcare provider, or non-profit that needs help to bridge a supply chain gap, please let us know of your needs. We have expanded our manufacturing capacity and all of our employees are committed to working overtime (7 days a week) to handle the increase in demand. We have already implemented protective measures against COVID-19 for the safety of our employees and those in receipt of our products. If you are interested in joining us in this mission, please fill out the contact form below and we will respond to your inquiry as soon as possible.
*Disclaimer: 3D printed and homemade masks are not NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Health & Safety) / FDA approved. These masks are not intended to be used in settings where standard FDA / NIOSH certified N95 masks and surgical masks are available for use. As the supply of critical PPE rapidly dwindles amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center for Disease Control (“CDC”) has issued guidelines for usage of alternative face masks in crisis capacities. Simolex has not tested any masks and makes no representations or guarantees regarding the safety, efficacy, or appropriate use of these masks in any particular situation. Our products are to be used at the manufacturer’s and user’s own risk.
